About us

A little information about Suzie and Bruce…

After high school, Suzie Lockhart attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, but the gnawing urge to write always remained with her. Three years ago, she began working on an idea for a YA novel. When her son, Bruce, realized he had the same passion for storytelling, they teamed up. Together, they finished that book, which is presently being considered for publication.

Their joint efforts have produced short stories such as Through the Looking Glass in Dionne’s Anthology, as well as the upcoming Of Shadow & Substance in Sirens Call Mental Ward: Stories from the Asylum.

Bruce has a flash fiction story published in Dark Eclipse, issue #7, entitled Afflicted.

Suzie’s first publication, Instinct, was in DMD’s Frightmares, A Fistful of Flash Fiction Horror. Another piece, Be Careful What You Wish For, will appear in January’s Dark Moon Digest. She also has a short story in the October issue of Sirens Call eZine, entitled The Last Temptation.

Suzie is delighted to be one of the female horror writer’s selected to appear in the upcoming Mistresses of the Macabre. Look for Playing with Fire in this incredible anthology, edited by author Lori Michelle.

Recently, Bruce and Suzie had another short story, Arctic Weaver, picked up for Sirens Call December eZine.

Both can be reached via e-mail at aspiringauthors@gmail.com.

Find them on FB: Suzie Wargo Lockhart or Bruce Lockhart.

Suzie is also on Twitter at suzieartist.

Author Questions (Fun game for any authors)

1)    What is the working title of your next book? Still focusing on getting The Lynx: Grey Matter published, and writing at least 3 follow up books. We have an editor working w/ us, and one Literary Agent currently holds the manuscript. We plan to start serious work on book 2 after Christmas. (We’ve been busy with several short story projects)

2)    Where did the idea come from for the book? On Halloween 3 years ago, we were watching Night of the Living Dead. The next morning, I was kidding around w/ my husband about doing a YA zombie book. Spoiler*** The book is not about zombies, but rather bizarre changes in students at a small town HS.

3)    What genre does your book fall under? YA. We combine fantasy, action, horror, romance, and a few we probably forgot to mention.

4)    What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition? Will Smith as Howard, Terry O’Quinn or Woody Harrelson as Allistor Lynx. Unknowns for the teenagers, who are the main characters oops.

5)    What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Students at Pleasant Valley HS are the test subjects in a sinister experiment to alter the mind.

6)   Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? Agency. (That’s the plan!)

7)    How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript? 18 months.

8)    What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Michael Grant’s Gone Series.

9)    Who or what inspired you to write this book? JK Rowling.

10) What else about the book might pique the reader's interest? We tell the story from multiple perspectives, as well as raise questions about opening doors to the human mind that nature has left closed.

How many "a" answers did you have for even-numbered questions? ___________
How many "b" answers did you have for odd-numbered questions? ___________
RIGHT HEMISPHERE TOTAL _______________

Left-Hemisphere Dominance (left total = 10 or more)

Your score indicates that you are generally a highly organized person. If you are sloppy, even your mess makes sense to you. When given a job to do, you like to approach the task one step at a time rather than plunging into it. If you are involved in extra-curricular activities, you are probably well-disciplined. For example, if you are a musician, you probably follow a practice schedule well. In the future, you'd probably do well in one of the following area: accounting, engineering, or computer programming

Right - Hemisphere Dominance (right total = 10 or more)

Your total indicates that you use intuition and creativity to achieve certain goals, rather than an outlined, detailed plan of action. You feel that too much planning tends to limit possibilities. If you are involved in extra-curricular activities that require practice or drilling, you perform well when inspired but otherwise do not enjoy the routine of practicing ever day. Chances are good that you are interested in one of the following areas: music, art, athletics.

Balanced Hemispheres (both totals = less than 10)

As indicated in the previous descriptions, left-hemisphere people prefer structure; right-hemisphere people do not. Your score indicates that you fall somewhere between these two extremes. When given a job to do, you may prepare yourself by making lists (something a left-hemisphere person would do), but the lists may not be highly organized (which a right hemisphere person may prefer.

Howard's Journal (Find out more about the Smart Virus inside)

Journal-Property of Howard B.

Entry, Oct. 3rd

I’m staying off the grid. I hate writing everything out by hand, but what you put on the computer can come back to bite you in the ass.

Caleb came to visit today. He informed me of some unusual happenings at the high school.

It appears there are two known cases of altered consciousness.

“His” plan has been set into motion. My effort to sabotage the research has failed.

The question that disturbs me most is; where to go from here? How many children are at risk? I don’t think I can stop it now…

Will continue to monitor the situation as it progresses…and Caleb.

Entry, Oct. 5th

Discovered some unsettling news concerning one of the students at the high school displaying heightened brain function. Indicates that unused portions of the brain are being tapped into, warranting unforeseen side effects.

I was able to hack into a frequently used social media site, and confirmed my suspicions. I found out that subject #1 exhibited an increase in thermal energy. Cases of reported pyro kinesis have been unconfirmed; however it appears that something did burn a student’s face.

Could these test subjects become dangerous?

Entry, Oct 7th

Alarming news from last night, after I found Caleb lost in the woods. As I led him home, he informed that his sister’s friend fell victim; to what the public is now referring to as the Smart Virus.

Caleb saw me in military camo and is beginning to put the pieces together.

Entry, Oct 10th

Used fake credentials to obtain a job as a janitor at Pleasant Valley General, in order to keep a closer eye on things. In the event of more cases.

3rd victim exhibiting unusually restless sleep behavior.

Acquired saliva sample and will make as many comparisons as possible.

The high school and middle school will be undergoing sanitation sweeps, not that it will matter…

Entry, Oct 12th

No sign of Caleb for the past few days. Not scheduled at the hospital.

Today Claire and I would have celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary.

The days become lonely without my wife and son; had it not been for that car crash, they would still be here with me.

Someday Allistor will pay for his crimes…

Entry, Oct 13th

I saw on my calendar that today is the date of the Turner’s big bonfire, so I know Caleb won’t be by today. I am anxious to get a saliva sample, so I can compare his with the one from the hospital. I pray it’s not a match.

Being alone most of the time, I get wrapped up in my research for days on end. It’s easy to lose track of time. Funny, though, that no matter how late into the night I work, I can never sleep past six AM.

Old habits die hard.

All this hair drives me crazy. It’s hot and uncomfortable. It is necessary, though; I can’t afford to be recognized if I’m going to continue to hide in plain sight.

Before I torched the lab, I took pictures of some of our documentation. I found one of the flow charts in my files. It was only supposed to be theoretical, but the possible case of pyro kinesis really gives cause for concern. Can the brain reach a point of developing past the point of human control? What will be the ramifications if the other theories on that flow chart come to pass?

And…what if there are ‘abilities’ that develop that we hadn’t even considered?

Look for Howard's Journal

The people of Pleasant Valley PA think Howard is just an old Hermit living in the woods. Little do they know there is much more to Howard then meets the eye. He's the only link to the mastermind who's hatched a diabolical plan; to use the children of Pleasant Valley as test subjects in his evil experiment...
